Lake Superior Agates come from Minnesota and are debated as the oldest agates on the planet! Created during the mid continental rift in the northern end of the country 1.1 billion years ago. This geologic event created air pocket filled basalt flows in northern Minnesota and the basin which created Lake Superior! These basalt flows had iron rich silica water flowing over them creating the signature red banding in these gorgeous stones! As the Larentide Ice Sheet made its way across the North Shore of Lake Superior roughly 20,000-25,000 years ago. It ground these gorgeous agates out of the basalt and dispersed them through out the Midwest region!
Specimen stones are face polished on one side. Making them amazing to add to any agate collectors display or just as a cool display piece around the home or office! Polishing only the one side shows the stone in it’s natural state and a nice polished side to show off the gorgeous interior that cutting and polishing reveal!
